Choosing a Wedding & Event Caterers

One: Prepare key pieces of information before contacting a caterer. This includes the date and time, the location, budget and how many people will be attending.

Two: Choose which kind of food you would like at your wedding. If you would like some sort of presentation, be sure to jot that down to be sure to remember. You also will need to decide whether or not your caterer will be serving alcohol or if you will manage that on your own.

Three: Ask the owners of the venue whether they provide caterers or if they have a list you can choose from.

Four: Think back to weddings you have attended in the past. If you were impressed by the food or the catering service, contact the couple and ask who they used. Be sure to ask the cater whether or not they were satisfied and if the caterer was easy to work with.

Five: Ask your wedding consultant (if you have one), photographer or anyone else who will be working at your wedding if they recommend any specific caterers.

Six: Contact your favorite restaurant and ask if they offer catering. Be sure to let them know of the date, time, headcount, budget, location, and any other information that they will need to provide the best service.

Seven: Look into each of the caterers that you have come across. Visit their websites, the actual business where they are located, and ask them to provide you with references and reviews. Begin narrowing down your list of caterers, until you have five or less left.

Eight: Set up interviews with the caterers that you have selected. Be sure to ask about what foods they can provide, what the service includes (waiters, tables, utensils, linens, etc.), if they are licensed to serve food and alcohol, if they are insured, and ask to sample some of their foods (and cake if needed).

Nine: Choose a caterer and contact them to set everything up for your wedding. Read the contract that is provided to you. If you are not satisfied with the contract, ask that changes be made. Be sure to look into whether you will receive a refund if you cancel and find out what would happen if they cancel.

Ten: Sign the contract. You may need to pay a deposit.
